I'm Christian Reber, and This Is the Story Behind Wunderlist

We've been fans of the to-do app Wunderlist for years. It won us over from the start with its minimalist, easy-to-use design, and every update brought even better features: shared to-dos, email notifications, and recurring tasks, among others. And we're not its only fans: Wunderlist was Apple's 2013 App of the Year. We caught up with founder and CEO Christian Reber to find out how one of our favorite apps came to life.

Harry-styles-wiig

Harry Styles somehow got even sexier.

For Jimmy Fallon's inaugural week as Tonight Show host, the funny man asked his famous buddies to swing by.

On Tuesday, Fallon invited Kristen Wiig to appear on the show, but the gracious comedian allowed her spot to be filled by another celeb: One Directioner Harry Styles

This isn't the first time Wiig has stepped aside while visiting Fallon. Over the summer on Late Night, Wiig posed as basketball legend Michael Jordan.

We don't know if Wiig is having a personality crisis or simply trying to stretch her improv chops, but Harry Styles better watch his back. Read more...

Paper-app-2

Facebook Paper may not be catching fire, but it won't fold anytime soon either.

Paper fell out of the top 100 free apps in Apple's App Store this week, less than a month after it launched

The iPhone app dipped to as low as 110 in the U.S. App Store rankings on Tuesday, according to data from app analytics service App Annie. As of publication, it had climbed back somewhat to 91, just behind a third-party app called InstaSize, which is intended as an unofficial companion to Facebook-owned Instagram

Facebook launched Paper, a social news reader, on Feb. 3 and received a tremendous amount of press coverage, not to mention getting promoted by Apple in the coveted top spot in the App Store. All of that helped the app hit No. 2 in the App Store rankings in the early days. Read more...

Oculusrift

The Oculus Rift aims to change the way we play video games with its fully-immersive virtual reality headset, but it also has its sights set on impacting the way we consume all media, including movies.

Video tech startup Condition One is currently working on a documentary called "Zero Point" about virtual reality headsets, made specifically for the Oculus Rift. Although the production was announced last year, the company released its first interactive trailer, which gives a fascinating taste of what we might see.

The Oculus Rift supports 3D movies and a 360-degree viewing experience — and "Zero Point" will take advantage of both — but the trailer is limited to 180-degree angles for now. But the two-minute clip lets you move your mouse in different directions to see different perspectives, likening the experience to moving your head while wearing the Oculus Rift Read more...

Pharrell-williams-raw-oceans

Now we know one of the big ideas that musician-entrepreneur Pharrell Williams had under his enormous hat: Taking plastic trash from the ocean and turning it into jeans.

Pharrell recently announced plans to launch a new jeans collection with the denim label G-Star RAW. The collection, called G-Star RAW for the Oceans, will be created using fabric from Bionic Yarn. We've been sterilizing and melting down plastic bottles to make synthetic threads for years now but Bionic Yarn's new thread will apparently originate with plastic waste pulled from the ocean. The details aren't available yet, though. Hat tip Grist. Read more...

Wallet

Forget Google Wallet. A London-based startup has created object, pose and gesture recognition technology that could let you merely wave your wallet at a computer screen to initiate an online payment.

That's just one of many possible applications for Seemove, a technology from Seeper. As the video below illustrates, Seemove can be used for Minority Report- and Iron Man types of pose and gesture-recognition that will let you pretend you're Tom Cruise or Tony Stark. Only here, as well as manipulating a computer with hand and arm movements, you can also train the system to recognize any object, like your smartphone allowing you to then literally "pull" photos and videos from your device. Pharrell.16.9

This Pharrell mashup will keep you up all night to get happy.

This video is equally as impressive as the music: Pop cover masters Pomplamoose created a catchy mashup of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, blended with Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" and "Lose Yourself to Dance." Williams performs vocals on all three of the original tracks, making this mashup Pharrell-tastic

The video was created using a one-shot technique and, as the name suggests, the action is recorded on a single camera. The video follows singer Nataly Dawn around the room as a projector displays clips of the duo performing the song on different instruments in classic Pomplamoose style Read more...

Robot_turtles_coding-131

NEW YORK — It's never too early to turn your child into a computer programmer

A new board game called Robot Turtles is attracting plenty of attention at the 2014 International American Toy Fair for teaching kids as young as 3 the basics of coding.

Robot Turtles is the most-funded board game in Kickstarter history, far surpassing its $25,000 goal with $630,000 in pledges. The company is now accepting preorders, priced at $24.99, and will ship in June.

The concept comes from former Google programmer Dan Shapiro, who wanted to share his love for coding with his two daughters. Although many computer-based platforms for preschools are already on the market, Shapiro wanted to take the learning process offline with a traditional board game Read more...

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is going to bat for an open Internet. The agency plans to rewrite the rules that govern how Internet traffic is delivered from service providers to customers in the wake of a court decision that struck down previous rules protecting net neutrality

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler outlined the commission's proposed new rules in a statement released Wednesday. The agency will not appeal the court's decision; rather, the FCC is viewing the decision as "an invitation for the commission to act to preserve a free and open Internet," according to a senior FCC official who briefed reporters.
